What is Exercise Psychology
Primarily concerned with the application of psychology to increase exercise participation and motivational levels in the general public
Definition of Exercise Psychology
the application of education, scientific, and professional contributions of psychology to the promotion, explanation, maintenance, and enhancement of behaviours related to physical work capacity (Rejeski and Brawley 1988)
Where do Exercise Psychologist work
GP referral, evaluation of exercise programs, centres of health, research schools
Why study Exercise Psychology
It’s about helping people from a psychological point of view to become or remain physically active.
Why is this important
For health reasons we cannot afford to be sedentary
What health problems are associated with low levels of PA
CPD, Obesity, Type 2 diabetes, Depression and Anxiety
What are the 2 types of benefit
Physical health and Psychological well-being
What is the first period of evolution and history of human lifestyle and what are the main points
Pre agriculture - hunting and gathering period high active levels and low fat diet
What is the 2nd period and points
Agricultural period high activity levels still low fat diet but fat increasing
What is the 3rd period and points
Industrial period, overcrowding infectious diseases increased and premature deaths
What is the 4th period and points
Nuclear and technological period . Medical advances, decrease in diseases, INCREASE in LIFESTYLE related premature deaths low activity levels, increase in fat diet
Current period
Internet, digital era. Big increase in LIFESTYLE-related premature deaths. Big decrease in activity levels. Big increase in fat in the diet.
What is the current problem
To many people are sedentary
What are the five levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy
Physiology or survival needs
Safety
Belongingness
Esteem
Self-actualisation
What does this mean Maslow’s
If we do not need to survive to live we are less likely to do PA but this is exactly what is happening before our eyes
