Psychometrics in sport and exercise Flashcards
What are Psychometrics in sport and exercise
They are measures of individual differences relating to personality.
Provide 5 examples of Psychometrics
The Big 5 personality test, Irrational Performance Beliefs Inventory, Sport Motivation scale 2, the achievement goal questionnaire, Mindfulness in Sport scale, Movement specific reinvestment scale.
Psychometrics are not perfect name some possible problems
Bias when familiar with tests, only relevant for that exact time when completing a questionnaire, gender and age-specific tests not many, some people may not fully understand how they feel, they are subjective and can only be used as an estimate
How and why are Psychometrics broken down
They are broken down into subcategories to see how they interact or affect peoples behaviour in different situations such as sport
Give a couple of examples of how they are broken down
The Big 5- Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism
Irrational Performance Beliefs Inventory - demandingness, awfulizing, Low frustration tolerance and Self-depreciation
What is the advantage of questionnaire Psychometrics
It is cheaper and less time-consuming, many people can be part of a study with a questionnaire. It can be sent to numerous people
What is the INTENTION of Psychometrics
To measure a particular construct in order to see if it influences or associates with numerous variables
Give an example of a Intention in Psychometrics
How Sports Performance is affected, How exercise behaviour is affected, mental health, physical health, burnout
What is the name of most common scale and what are the most common markers
Likert scale is normally or most often 5 or 7 as this provides a mid-ground option
Provide an example of a psychometric with only one construct/variable
The self-efficacy scale only measures situational confidence
Explain sub scales
These are the other variables within the psychometric for instance Big 5 has 5 personality constructs, openness, conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism
What is stage one of developing a psychometric
What is being assessed, is there a theoretical background to the psychometric is there scope for the construct to be developed
Provide an example of how a psychometric may be developed
Like Dr Katie did with the Movement specific Reinvestment Scale she made it rowing specific
Explain other possible considerations if its going World wide
Translate to another language. This is not straight forward as the interpretation and meaning of words are different so collaborate with expert language and then try the translated version on the foreigner to check its accuracy and understandable
How if a framework is used
DEDUCTIVE, this helps to generate the Likert scale and item generation, The Expert opinion of those behind theory is sort, priori power quality check with sample analysis of RELIABILITY validity
