Cognitive Dissonance

A

D- People wish to reduce inconsistency
- Therefore find evidence to support their own view

  • Defined as uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously
  • When attitudes =/= behaviour
  • Reject new information

Fundamental Attribution Error

A
  • Overestimate the power of the person
  • Underestimate the power of the situation
  • Situation is not noticed when ppl make attribution for behaviour of others
  • However, is noticed when making attribution for one’s own behaviour
  • people will take situation in account when explaining their own behaviour

  • Attribute successes to dispositional factors
  • Failures to situational factors
