Q

What is the WMM supposedly used for?

A

Used when working on complex tasks where info needs to be stored as u go along

Q

What are the 3 components of the WMM?

A

Central executive, and the 2 slave systems - visuospatial sketchpad, and phonological loop.

Episodic buffer added as 3rd slave system at later date

Q

What is the function of the central executive?

A

Coordinates + manages other components of WMM. Pays attention to incoming data, makes decisions on this data, and allocates tasks to slave system (decides what we pay attention to + what part of system deals with it)

Q

What is the phonological loop split into?

Q

What is the function of the phonological STORE?

A

Inner ear - stores words u hear, and only deals with acoustically encoded info

Q

What is the duration + capacity of the phonological STORE?

A

Duration = 1.5 - 2 seconds
Capacity = Holds the amount of info u can say in 1.5 - 2 seconds

Q

What is the function of the articulatory control process?

A

Inner voice - Rehearses verbal sounds + holds info that we want to maintain or say. Allows maintenance rehearsal

Q

What is the function of the visuospatial sketchpad (VSS)?

A

Stores visual + spatial info (can visualise where things are). Known as the inner eye (what things look like in ur mind)

Q

What did Logie (1995) subdivide the VSS into?

A
  • Visual cache = Stores visual data e.g. images
  • Inner scribe = Records arrangement of objects in a room. Allows u to rehearse visual/spatial info to maintain in visual cache

Q

Why was the episodic buffer added to the VSS?

A

To add detail on how the phonological loop + visuospatial sketchpad interact.

Q

What is the function of the episodic buffer?

A

Temp store for info, integrates visual, spatial, and verbal info processed by other components. Maintains a sense of time sequencing
