What is qualitative data?
Language-based data collected through interviews, open questions, and content analysis. Allows researchers to develop insights into subjective experiences, ops + feelings
What is triangulation?
Multiple methods used then all data put together
What is longitudinal research?
Takes place over a long time
What is a case study?
Detailed investigation into an individual or small group of ppl, usually regarding an unusual phenomenon or biographical event
What are some features of a case study?
Qualitative data, idiographic (can only apply results to that 1 person), individual/small group, biographical event, unusual phenomenon
What are the strengths of case studies?
- Can be used to investigate human behaviour + rare experiences
- Produces in depth data due to complex factors that can be studied
What are the weaknesses of case studies?
- Difficult to generalise, due to unique characteristics
- Cant make before + after comparisons
- Need to use recollection of past events, evidence may be unreliable since ppls memories are inaccurate
- May lack objectivity as they get to know case
- Ethical issues, confidentiality not protected due to individual cases
