What does Durkheim believe regarding education?
Serves two functions
- specialist skills
- social solidarity
Explain specialist skills
- modern economics complex and need educated workforce
- education system provides skills based on ability
- specialist skills allows them to join workforce as productive members of society
Explain social solidarity
- “sense of belonging among members, allows them to come together and co-operate”
- schools are mini society’s
- school transmits norms and values
- pupils must follow instructions of superiors and work with people they don’t like
What does Shultz believe regarding education?
Education is an investment
- “human capital”
- investing in education allows kids to develop skills, enter workforce, productive members of society
- stimulates economic growth
