What is material deprivation?
- Poverty: lack of basic necessities e.g housing, diet, clothing or money
- WC underachieve because of lack of resources in the home
What are 3 material factors negatively effecting WC student?
- Housing
- Diet & nutrition
- Financial costs of education
How does housing negatively effect students?
WC & overcrowded houses
- Difficult to find places to study
- Disturbed sleep from room sharing
- Illness lead to time off of schools
Quality of housing
- disruption from moving house frequently
- damp housing leads to illness
How does diet & poor nutrition negatively affect students?
- Effects physical & mental health
- Lowers immune system
- Effects concentration
How does financial costs negatively affect students?
- Can’t afford textbooks, computers, stationery ect
- Transport costs
- Have to get jobs which disrupts learning
- Fear of stigmatisation: 20% of pupils eligible for FSM don’t take it
What is “ fear of debt”?
WC have fear of debt when considering going to uni which impacts decision
What are positive evaluation points on material deprivation?
- WC students do get lower grades than MC & there is quantitative data to prove it
- Social Policies have been put in place to deal with deprivation, however the attainment gap is still large
What are negative evaluation points on material deprivation?
- Ignores internal factors
- Deterministic: some WC students succeed in education
