The working memory model Flashcards
Who first felt that STM was not just one store?
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
Why did they think this?
- If you do two things at the same time and they are both visual tasks, you perform them less well than if you do them separately
- If you do two things at the same time and one is visual whereas the other involves sound, then there is no interference. You do them simultaneouly as you would do them separately
What is the function of the central executive?
Direct attention to particular tasks, determining at any time how the brain’s ‘resources’ are allocated to tasks
Capacity of the central executive?
Limited
cannot attend to many things at once
Phonological loop capacity?
Limited
What does the phonological loop do?
Deals with auditory information and preserves the order of information
What did Baddeley ( 1986) further subdivide the phonological loop into?
- Phonological store ( holds words you hear)
- Articulatory process- used in words that are heard or seen
What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad used for?
Coding visual information in terms of separate objects
What is an example of a spatial task?
Getting from one room to another
How long is visual and/or spatial information stored here?
Temporarily
What is visual information?
What things look like
What is spatial information?
The physical relationship between things
What did Logie (1995) suggest the visuo-spatial sketchpad can be divided into?
- A visual cache- storing information about visual items
> Form and colour - An inner scribe which stores the arrangement of objects in the visual field
Why did Baddeley (2000) add the episodic buffer?
The model needed a general store
What is the episodic buffer?
Extra storage system
