What is depression?
A mood, or affective disorder
What are behavioural symptoms of depression?
Neglect of personal appearance, loss of appetite, disturbed sleep patterns (insomnia), loss of energy (tiredness), withdrawal from others.
What are emotional symtoms of depression?
Intense sadness, irritability, apathy (loss of interest of enjoyment), feelings of worthlessness, anger.
What are cognitive symptoms of depression?
Negative thoughts, lack of concentration, low self-esteem, poor memory, recurrent thoughts of death, low confidence.
What does the cognitive appraoch believe about depression?
That it stems from faulty cognitions about others, our world and us
What is the faulty thinking maybe due to?
cognitive deficiencies (lack of planning) or cognitive distortions (processing information inaccurately)
What does Ellis suggest about depression?
That it occurs through irrational thinking
What does Beck propose?
The cognitive triad
