What is the cognitive triad?
Three forms of negative thinking that are typical of individuals with depression

Negative schemas and cognitive biases to produce depressive thinking
What are cognitive biases?
Distortions of thought processes
What are individuals with depression prone to?
Making logical errors in their thinking and they tend to focus selectively on certain aspects of a situation
What does Beck believe about depressive prone individuals?
The individual develop a negative self-schema
What does Beck claim about negaive schemas?
They may be aquaired in childhood as a result of a traumatic event
Negative thinking may be generally an effect rather than a cause?
Perhaps individuals only start experiencing negative thoughts after having developed depression. However, evidence that negative thinking can be involved in the development of depression was obtained by Lewinsohn et al. (2001).
