Institutionalised Romanian orphans compared to the control more likely to display disinhibited attachment
What are the effects of institutionalisation?
physical underdevelopment, intellectual underfunctioning, dishibited attachment , poor parenting
Individual differences
some children appear to recover better despite no apparent attachments within sensitive period
Real-life application
Adoption should be as early as possible and then infants securely attach
- Singer et al
Deprivation is only one factor
most institutionalised children experience multiple risks, thus material deprivation should not be over exaggerated
