The multi-store model of memory Flashcards
When was the Multi-Store Memory model first described?
By Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968
What is the sensory register?
The place where information is held at each of the senses
eyes, ears, nose, fingers, tongue
What is the capacity of these registers?
Very large
What happens when the person’s attention is focused on one of the sensory stores?
The data is transfered to STM
Attention is the first step in remembering something
What is information held in STM used for?
Immediate tasks
working out maths problems or remembering the directions to a friend’s house
What is short-term memories duration?
Limited
What will happen if memories in STM if they are not rehearsed?
They will disappear (decay) rather quickly
What is maintenance rehearsal?
when you want to remember something and so you repeat things over and over
What is LTM duration?
Potentially unlimited
What is LTM Capacity?
Potentially unlimited
What is retrieval?
The process of getting information from LTM, the passing of information back to the STM
What is the supporting evidence for the multi-store model memory
Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and encoding
How is information encoded in the sensory memory?
Modality specific
How is information encoded in the STM?
Acoustically
How is information encoded in the LTM?
Semantically
