The Work of Mendel Flashcards
Who was Gregor Mendel?
Australian monk who trained in mathematics and natural history at the University of Vienna.
What did he do on his garden plot?
In his garden plot at the monastery Mendel noted how characteristics in plants were passed on from one generation to the next.
When was his research published?
In 1866 and eventually became the foundation of modern genetics.
What are Mendel’s 3 important conclusions?
Characteristics is plants are determined by hereditary units.
Hereditary units passed on from both parents, 1 unit from each parent.
Hereditary units can be dominant or recessive.
What are the hereditary units?
Genes.
In Mendel’s time nobody new anything about genes or DNA, significance of his work was not realised until his death.
