Exercise Flashcards
What happens when you exercise?
You body quickly adapts so that your muscles get more oxygen and glucose to supply energy.
Exercise increases…
Heart rate.
What are muscles made up of and what do they do?
Muscle cells.
These use oxygen to release energy from glucose which is used to contract the muscles.
What does an increase in muscle activity require?
More glucose and oxygen to be supplied to the muscle cells.
Extra carbon dioxide needs to be removed from the muscle cells.
For this to happen the blood has to flow at a faster rate.
Why does physical activity do to your body?
Increases your breathig rate and makes you breathe more deeply to meet the demand for extra oxygen.
Increase the speed at which the heart pumps.
Compare an unfit person and fit person when exercising?
Unfit person heart rate goes up a more during excercise that a fit person, and they take longer recover.
Glycogen is used during exercise.
Some glucose from food is stored as glycogen.
Glycogen’s mainly stored in the liver but each muscle also has it own store.
During vigorous exercise muscles use glucose rapidly so some of the stored glycogen is converted back to glucose to provide more energy.
What happens when you do vigorous exercise?
Your body can’t supply enough oxygen to your muscles, they start doing anaerobic respiration instead of aerobic respiration.
What does anaerobic respiration mean?
Just means without oxygen,
Its the incomplete breakdown of glucose which produce lactic acid.
How is anaerobic respiration not the best way to convert glucose into energy?
As lactic acid builds up in the muscles which gets painful.
Can cause muscle fatigue.
What does muscle fatigue mean?
The muscles get tired and they stop contracting efficinetlly.
How is aerobic respiration better than anaerobic respiration?
Beacuse anarerobic respiration does not release nearly as much energy.
Give a pro about anaerobic rspiration?
You can keep using your muscles for a while longer.
What is the word equation for anaerbic respiration?
Glucose —–> energy+ lactic acid.
What does anaerobic respiration lead to?
Oxygen debt.
What does oxygen debt mean?
You have to repay the oxygen that you didn’t get to your msucles in time because your lungs, heart and blood couldn’t keep up with the demand earlier on.
How do you repay the oxygen to your muscles?
Keep breathing hard for a while after you stop, to get more oxygen into your blood.
Blood flows through your muscles to remove lactic acid by oxidising it to harmless co2 and water.
What happens when there us high levels of carbon dioxode and lactic acid detected in the blood by the brain?
The pulse and breathing rate stays high to try and rectify the situation.
