More on Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
The breaking down of food is catalysed by what?
Enzymes.
What do the salivary glands produce?
Amylase enzyme in the saliva.
What is the gullet also known as?
The esophagus.
What happens in the stomach?
It pummels the food with its muscular walls.
Produces protease called pepsin.
It produces hydrochloric acid.
Why does the stomach produce hydrochloric acid, give 2 reasons?
To kill bacteria.
Give the right pH for the protease enzymes to work.
What happens in the liver?
Where bile is produced.
Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
What happens in the gall bladder?
Where bile is stored before its released into the small intestine.
What happens in the pancreas?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes.
It releases these into the small intestine.
What happens in the small intestine?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion.
Where digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood.
What happens in the large intestine?
Where excess water is absorbed from the food.
What happens at the rectum?
Where faces made up mainly of undigested food are stored before they go through the anus.
What are enzymes in the digestive system produced by?
Specialised cells in glands and in the gut lining.
