The Tibia Flashcards
What is the tibial plateau and what forms it, also what structure(s) does it articulate with?
It is a flat surface and the medial and lateral condyles (proximal end of the bone) form it
This structure articulates with the femoral condyles
What and where is the intercondylar eminence of the tibia? What is this the main site of attachment for? Where would this structure go?
Located between the two condyles
It consists of two tubercles and a roughened area
Attachment for the ligaments and menisci of the knee joint.
The tibial intercondylar tubercles fit into the intercondylar fossa of the femur
On the anterior side of the proximal tibia, inferior to the condyles, there is a structure where the patella ligament attaches. What is this called?
The tibial tuberosity
What marks the start of the anterior border of the tibia?
The tibial tuberosity (can be felt)
**the periosteal covering of the tibia is susceptible to damage, presenting clinically as bruising
What marks the posterior surface of the tibia?
The solene line (running inferomedially eventually blending with the medial border)
**where part of the soles muscle originates
What is the lateral border of the tibia also called and why?
Interosseous border
Gives attachment to the interosseous membrane that binds the tibia and fibula together.
What is the bony projection on the medial side of the tibia that continues inferiorly at the distal end? What does it articulate with?
Medial malleolus
It articulates with the tarsal bonds to form part of the ankle joint
What is found on the posterior side of the tibia at the distal end?
A groove where the tibialis posterior muscle attaches.
What is the fibulae notch found on the lower limb?
A notch found on the distal lateral part of the tibia, it is where the fibula is bound to the tibia.
In what people are tibia fractures most common?
Middle ages and elderly
In what scenario would the displacement of a fractured tibia be minimal?
If the fibula was not fractured because it is able to support the tibia.
What part of the tibia is most venerable to injury?
The proximal part
The condyles may be broken up in the fracture and it is not uncommon for there to be injured to the ligaments of the knee
What part of the tibia can be fractured at the ankle? How? What sort of fracture is caused?
The medial malleolus
Caused by over inversion of the foot. The talus of the foot is forced against the medial malleolus causing a spiral fracture.
What part of the tibia articulates with the intercondylar fossa of the femur?
The intercondylar eminence
