The Fibula Flashcards
In relation to the tibia where is the fibula found?
Laterally
What is the main function of the fibula and how does this differ from the tibia’s main function?
Muscle attachment
Tibias main function is weight bearing
How does the fibula articulate with the lateral condyle of the tibia?
It has an enlarged head (proximally) which contains a facet (on the medial side)
Where can the common fibula nerve be found?
On the posterior and lateral surface of the fibula neck
Distally the lateral surface of the fibula continues inferiorly, what is this bony structure called?
Lateral malleolus
Which of the two malleolus found at the ankles is most prominent and which bone is it part of?
Lateral malleolus
Part of the fibula
What are the types of fractures that can happen to the lateral malleolus of the fibula and how do they occur?
Spiral fracture- external rotation of ankle forces talus against bone
Travers fracture- eversion (foot twisting outwards) causing the talus to push against the lateral malleolus
