Anterior Forarm Muscles Flashcards
How many muscles are in the superior compartment of the anterior forearm and where do they all originate from?
4 (flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus, flexor carpi radialis and pronator teres)
Common tendon arising from the medial epicondyle of the humerus
Name the 4 superficial muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Palmaris Longus
Flexor carpi radialis
Pronator teres
What are the attachments of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle of the forearm?
2 orgins-the medial epicondyle and ulnar (long origin)
Attaches to the pisiform carpal bone
What are the actions of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle in the forearm?
Flexion and adduction at the wrist
What nerve innervated the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle of the forearm?
Ulnar nerve
What is special about the palmaris longus?
It is absent in about 15% of the population
What are the attachments of the palmaris longus muscle of the forearm?
Originates form the medial epicondyle
Attaches to the flexor retinaculum of the wrist
What is the action of the palmaris longus muscle of the forearm?
Flexion at the wrist
What nerve innervates the palmaris longus muscle of the forearm?
Median nerve (C7)
What are the attachments of the flexor carpi radialis muscle of the forearm?
Origantes from the medial epicondyle
Attaches to the base of metacarpals 2 and 3
What is the action of the flexor carpi radialis muscle of the forearm?
Flexion and abduction at the wrist
What nerve innervates the flexor carpi radialis muscle of the forearm?
Median nerve
What is special about the pronator teres muscle of the forearm?
The lateral border of it forms the medial border of the cubital fossa
What are the attachments of the pronator teres muscle of the forearm?
2 origins: medial epicondyle and coronoid process of ulna
Attaches laterally to the mid-shaft of the radius
What is the action of the pronator teres muscle of the forearm?
Pronation of the forearm
What nerve innervates the pronator teres muscle of the forearm?
Median nerve
What muscle is the only intermediate muscle found in the forearm?
Flexor digitorum superficialis
*(can sometimes be classed as a superficial muscle)
What two structures run between the heads of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle of the forearm and travel posteriorly?
The median nerve and ulnar artery
What are the attachments of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle of the forearm?
2 heads- one from medial epicondyle of humerus and one from radius
Muscle splits into 4 tendons at wrist and each attach to one of the middle phalanges of the four fingers
What is the action of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle of the forearm?
Flexes the metacarpophalangeal joint and proximal interphalangeal joints at the 4 fingers
And flexes at the wrist
What nerve innervates the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle of the forearm?
Median nerve
How many muscles are found in the deep anterior section of the forearm? Name them
3
Flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus and pronator quadratus
What are the attachments of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the forearm?
Originates from the ulna and associate interosseous membrane
Splits into 4 tendons at wrist, which each attach to one of the 4 distal phalanges of the four fingers
What is the action of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the forearm?
Flex distal interphalangeal joints of fingers (only muscle that can do so), also flexes at metacarpophalangeal joints and at wrist
What nerve innervates the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the forearm?
Medial half (acting on the little and ring fingers) = ulnar nerve
Lateral half (middle and index fingers)= (anterior interosseous branch of the) median nerve
Where does the flexor pollicis longus lie in relations to the flexor digitorum profundus of the forearm?
Laterally
What are the attachments of the flexor pollicis longus of the forearm?
Originates from the anterior surface of the radius and surrounding interosseous membrane
Attaches to the base of the distal phalanx of the thumb
What is the action of the flexor pollicis longus of the forearm?
Flexes the interphalangeal join and metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
What nerve innervates the flexor pollicis longus of the forearm?
Median nerve (anterior interosseous branch)
Where is the pronator quadratus found in relation to the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus? What does it look like?
Square shaped muscle lying deep the the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus
What are the attachments of the pronator quadratus muscle of the forearm?
Origninates from the anterior surface of the ulna
Attaches to the anterior surface of the radius
What is the action of the pronator quadratus muscle of the forearm?
Pronates the forearm
What nerve innervates the pronator quadratus muscle of the forearm?
Median nerve (anterior interosseous branch)
What is the blood supply of the pronator teres?
Ulnar artery/ anterior ulnar recurrent artery
