Muscles Of The Gluteal Region Flashcards
What are the two groups that the gluteal muscles are separated into?
Superficial abductors and extenders (gluteus maximum, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata)
Deep lateral rotators (quadratus femoris, piriformis, gemellus superior, gemellus inferior and obturator internus)
What are the attachments of the gluteus maximus?
Origniates from the gluteal surface of the ilium, sacrum and coccyx.
Slopes across buttocks at 45 degree angle then inserts into the iliotibial tract and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur
What is the action of gluteus maximus?
Main extensor of the thigh, assists with lateral rotation.
However it is only used when force is required such as running or climbing
What nerve innervates the gluteus maximus muscle?
Inferior gluteal nerve
What are the attachments of the gluteus medius?
Gluteal surface of the ilium
Inserts into the lateral surface of the greater trochanter
What is the action of the gluteus medius?
Abducts and medially rotates the lower limb. During locomotion, it secures the pelvis, preventing pelvic drop of the opposite limb.
What nerve innervates the gluteus medius?
Superior gluteal nerve
What are the attachments of the gluteus minimus?
Originates from the ilium
converges to form a tendon
Inserting to the anterior side of the greater trochanter
What are the actions of the gluteus minimus?
Abducts and medially rotates the lower limb. During locomotion, it secures the pelvis, preventing the pelvic drop of the opposite limb.
What nerve innervates the gluteus minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve
