The Structure and Function of the Nucleus (subsection of 3.4) Flashcards
What is the nucleoplasm?
It contains molecules like nucleotides and enzymes which are needed for DNA and RNA synthesis
What is the double membrane around the nucleus called?
The nuclear envelope
What does the outer membrane have on its surface?
It’s continuous with endoplasmic reticulum and has ribosomes on its surface
What is the function of the nuclear envelope?
It controls the passage of materials in and outside of the nucleus and contains the reactions that occur within it
What does the nuclear envelope consist of?
Two phospholipids bi layers
What is the function of the nuclear pores?
To allow molecules to enter and leave the nucleus
What is chromatin?
DNA coiled around histones
What is the function of the nucleolus?
Where ribsomal RNA is produced and assembles ribosomes
What are the functions of the nucleus?
- retain the genetic material of the cell
- makes ribosomal RNA and ribosomes
- act as the control center of the cell through the production of mRNA and tRNA (protein synthesis)
