3.7) Mitosis Flashcards
What stage occurs before mitosis in the cell cycle?
Interphase
What are the five stages of mitosis?
- Intephase
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telephase/ Cytokineses
What is Mitosis important for?
- Growth
- Repair
- Reproduction
What happens in the interphase stage?
DNA replicates
The two copies of DNA join at the center called the centromere
What happens in the prophase stage?
Chromosomes condense and becomes visible
Spindle fibers form
What happens in the metaphase stage?
Chromosomes are aligned at the center of the cell by the spindle fibers
What happens in the anaphase stage?
Centromeres divide separating each pair of chromatids
Spindle fibers pull the chromoatids to opposite poles of the cell
What happens in the telephase stage?
- Chromosomes reach poles and become longer and thinner, then eventually disappear leaving chromatin
- Nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes- creating two nuclei
- Cytokineses occurs, dividing the cytoplasm forming two identical daughter cells
In which stage do chromosomes become visible, shorten and thicken
Prophase
In which stage are the chromatids pulled part to opposite ends of the pole?
Anaphase
In which stage do the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell?
Metaphase
What pulls the chromatids apart?
The spindle fibers
In which stage does the nuclear envelope and nucleolus reform?
Telephase
What is cytokineses?
The process by which the cytoplasm divides forming two identical daughter cells
Cell division in prokaryotic cells take place by which process?
Binary fission
