2.2) DNA Replication Flashcards
1
Q
What is Nuclear Division?
A
The process by which the nucleus divides
2
Q
What are the two types of Nuclear Division?
A
- Mitosis
- Meoisis
3
Q
What is Cytokinesis
A
The process by which the whole cell divides
4
Q
What are the 4 requirements for Semi-Conservative replication to be able to take place?
A
- Free nucelotides
- Template (Both strands of DNA will act as the template)
- Enzymes
- Energy
5
Q
What is the function of the enzyme ‘Helicase’?
A
To unwind the DNA and break down the hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides in each strand
6
Q
Describe the steps that take place in Semi- Conservative replication
A
- The enzyme ‘DNA Helicase’ breaks the hydrogen bonds that link the base pairs of DNA
- The double helix unwinds and seperates into its 2 strands.
- Free nucleotides that have been activated bind to thier complimetary bases
- The enzyme ‘DNA Polymerase’ joins nucelotides through a condensation reaction which makes phosphodiester bonds.
- All the nucleotides are joined to form a polynucleotide chain
- Two identical moleucles of DNA are formed
6
Q
What is the function of the enzyme ‘Polymerase’?
A
To join adjacent nucelotides together in a condentsation reaction which forms phosphodiester bonds
