The Golgi apparatus (subsection of 3.4) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of the Golgi apparatus?
A
It’s a more compact version of the SER
2
Q
How does the Golgi apparatus process proteins and lipids from the ER?
A
- Labels the molecules to ensure they are sent to the right place in the cell
- Modified proteins and lipids are packaged into Golgi vesicles which pinch off from the Golgi and move to the cell surface to release their contents
- Modifies them by adding carbohydrates to proteins to form glycoproteins
3
Q
What are the functions of the Golgi apparatus?
A
- Add carbohydrates to proteins to form glycoproteins
- Making and releasing secretory enzymes
- Produce carbohydrates for plant cell walls
- Transport, modify and store lipids
- Forming lysosomes
