The Cell Wall (subsection of 3.4) Flashcards
1
Q
Where are cell walls found?
A
In plant cells
2
Q
What are cell walls made of?
A
Microfibril polysaccahride cellulose embedded in a matrix
3
Q
What is the main characteristic of cellulose microfibrils?
A
They are very strong so contribute to the overall strength of the cell wall
4
Q
What are the features of the cell wall?
A
- Contains a number of polysaccharides (cellulose)
- A thin layer called the ‘middle lamella’ between cell walls of adjacent cells( which(cements cells together)
5
Q
What are the functions of the cell wall?
A
- Provides strength to stop the cell from bursting due to pressure caused by water entering
- Strengthens entire plant
- Allows water to pass along the wall( helps water move through the plant)
6
Q
What is fungal cell walls made of?
A
Chitin
7
Q
What are plant cell walls made of?
A
Cellulose
