The Skeletal Systm Flashcards
Define long bones
Long straight bones that allow gross movements e.g. femur, humerus
Define short bones
Small bones that allow fine controlled movements e.g carplas
Define flat bones
Large flat bones that usually protect vital organs e,g, cranium , ribs
Define irregular bones
Specifically shaped bones designed to protect parts of the body e.g. virtibrae
Name the 6 functions of the skeletal system
- Movement
- Mineral storage
- Protection
- Production of red blood cells
- support
- Shape
How is movement created
When muscles contract they put on tendons which are attached to bones. this create movement
Define joint
Place where 2 or more bones meet
Define synovial joint
Its The most common type of joint which are specifically designed to allow movement and prevent injury
What is synovial fluid used for
It lubricates the joint to reduce friction when moving
Define bursae
Fluid filled bag that reduces friction
Define synovial membrane
Lining of the joint that produces synovial fluid
What is cartilage used for
It protects the end of bones and absorbs shock which therefore reduces friction
What are ligaments used for
Ligaments attach bone to bone to help stabilise joints
What do tendons attach too
Tendons attach muscle to bone
Define hinge joints
Joints that allow body parts to achieve flexion and extension e.g. knee ankle elbow
Define ball and socket joints
Joints that allow flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction and rotation e,g. Shoulder and hip
Define plantar flexion
Pointing toes down
Define dorsiflexion
Pulling toes up
Define abduction
Moving away from midline of body
Define adduction
Movement towards mid-line of body
Define flexion
Angle joint decreases
Define extension
Angle joint increases
Define circumduction
Circular movement around the joint
Define rotation
Turning around an axis/fixed point
What 4 bones make up the knee joint
- Femur
- Tibia
- Fibula
- Patella
What 3 bones make up the elbow joint
- Humerus
- Ulna
- Radius
What 3 bones make up the ankle joint
- Tibia
- Fibula
- Talus
What 2 bones make up the hip joint
- Pelvis
- Femur
What 3 bones make up the shoulder joint
- Clavicle
- Scapular
- Humerus
