Mechanics Of Breathing Flashcards
What muscles are involved inbreathing at rest
Intercostal muscles, diaphram
What additional muscles are involved in breathing during exercise
Pectorals, abdominals, sternocleidomastoid
What happens to your diaphragm during inhalation
It contracts and moves down and flatterns
What happens to your diaphragm during exhalation
Diaphragm relaxes and moves up and creates a dome shape
Why are abdominals used during exhalation in exercise
They are used to pull down the rib cage and force air out of the lungs and speed up expiration
Why is the chest cavity increased during inhalation
So more air can enter the lungs
Define tidal volume
The amount of air inhaled and exhaled breath
Define Vital capacity
The amount of air that can forcibly breath in and out
Define Residual volume
Amount of air left in the lungs after maximum air out
Define Expiratory reserve volume
Amount of air can be breathed out after a normal breath
Define Inspiratory reserve volume
Amount of air that can be breathed in after a normal breath
