Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What 3 components make up the cardiovascular system
1.heart
2.blood vessels
3. Blood
What are the 3.blood vessles
- Ateries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What are the 3 main purposes of the cardiovascular system
1.To deliver oxygen to working muscles
2. To remove waste products E.G.carbon dioxide and lactic acid
3. Return blood to Lungs for oxygenation
Define atrium
Upper chambers that collect blood from the veins
Define ventricles
Lower chambers that pump oxygenated blood through the arteries
Whats the role of the pulmonary artery
To take blood away from the heart to the lungs
Whats the role of pulmonary veins
To take blood to the working muscles
Define heart rate
How many times your heart beats per minute ( bpm)
Define stroke volume
The amount of blood pumped out of the heart her beat
Define cardiac output
How much blood leave the heart per minute
Whats the equation of cardiac output
Heart rate x stroke volume. Q = HR x SV
Define systole
When the heart contracts and pumps blood out
Define Diastole
Heart relaxes and Chambers filled with blood
Define cardiac cycle
One cycle of diastole and systole
Define recovery rate
How long it takes for your heart rate to get back to you resting heartbeat
Define anticipatory rise
Before exercising your body releases adrenaline which increases your heart rate
What is the first stage of the cardiac cycle
Deoxygenated blood enters through the right atrium
Whats the second stage of the cardiac cycle
The heart contracts and blood passes through a valve into the right ventricle
What’s the third stage of the cardiac cycle
The pulmonary artery transport the deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What’s the fourth stage of the cardiac cycle
Gassiest exchange takes place resulting in oxygenated blood
What’s the fifth stage of the cardiac cycle
The pulmonary vein transport the oxygenated blood back to the heart were enters the left atrium
What’s the six stage of the cardiac cycle
Blood passes to a valve into the left ventricle
What’s the last stage of the cardiac cycle
Oxygenated blood is ejected from the heart and is transferred to the body and muscles via the aorta
What is the role of a vein
To carry blood back to the heart
What is the role of an artery
To carry blood away from the heart
What is the role of the capillaries
To give muscles and organs oxygenated blood
Define vasoconstriction
Where blood vessels get smaller through lumen and stop the blood and redirect it somewhere else
Define vasodilation
When the lumen in blood vessels widen which allow more blood to flow through the muscles being used
Define vascular shunt
The distribution of blood to where muscles and organs have an increased demand by vasoconstriction and vasodilation
Define gaseous exchange
The process where the deoxygenated blood gets oxygenated in the lungs
