The Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the respiratory system?
A
Organs and tissues that help your body to exchange gases through the air and the blood
2
Q
How much of the air is made up of oxygen?
A
21%
3
Q
What goes into the lungs and what comes out of the lungs when breathing?
A
Oxygen goes into the lungs
Carbon dioxide out (waste product)
4
Q
What gases are involved in gas exchange and where does it happen?
A
Carbon dioxide and oxygen
Lungs and alveoli
5
Q
What are all the organs involved in the respiratory system?
A
- Lungs
- Bronchus
- Nose
- Alveoli
- Diaphram
- Trachea
- Bronchiole
6
Q
What are some adaptations of alveoli?
A
- Moist walls - gases dissolve in the moisture helping them to pass across the surface
- Thin/permeable walls - allow gases to cross easily
- Extensive blood supply - ensures oxygen-rich blood is taken away from the lungs and carbon dioxide-rich
blood is taken to the lungs - Provide a large surface area - more gases can be exchanged at a greater rate
