Earth's Resources Flashcards
What are the 4 spheres of the Earth?
Atmosphere
Hydrosphere
Lithosphere
Biosphere
What is the atmosphere?
Atmosphere - layer of gases above Earth’s surface
- eg. air
What is the hydrosphere?
Hydrosphere - all the water on Earth
- eg. water
What is the lithosphere?
Lithosphere - solid outer part of the Earth
- eg. rocks
- eg. minerals
- eg. fossil fuels
- eg. soil
What is the biosphere?
Biosphere - parts of the Earth where living things exist
What is a resource in science?
- In science a resource is any source (or supply) from which something useful can be obtained to meet a need of humans (or other living things)
- A resource is usually a material substance but can be a form of energy
Is a resource man-made or natural?
Can be either
What are some examples of natural resources?
- rocks for building eg. sandstone, marble
- minerals in rocks eg. irone ore, copper ore
- fossil fuels for energy eg. coal, natural gas
- soil for farming
- air for oxygen to breathe
- water for drinking, washing and farming
- sunlight for energy, growing plants
- living things eg. trees for wood, paper
What are some examples of man-made resources
- glass from sand to make windows, bottles
- plastic to make clothing, chairs and pens
- concrete
- paper
- natural fibres like wool from sheep and cotton plant for clothing
What are non-renewable resources?
A non-renewable resource is a resource that is being used up faster than it is being replenished. This is because it usually takes longer than human lifetime to be replenished
What are renewable sources?
A renewable resource is a resource that is being naturally replenished as fast as it is being used up. This is because it takes much less time than human lifetime to be replenished
What are examples of non-renewable sources?
- rocks
- fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
- minerals
- soil for farming
- living things (trees)
What are examples of renewable sources?
- air/wind
- water/wave
- sunlight
- living things (sheep, cotton plant)
What are the 3 different types of rocks?
Metamorphic
Igneous
Sedimentary
What is a metamorphic rock?
Metamorphic rock is formed when rock is put under high heat and high pressure or hot minerals
