The Musco-skeletal System Flashcards
Why do we have a skeleton?
To support our bodies and keep us upright. It also helps us to move and keep our organs safe. Muscular systems are also important for more functions
What would you look like without a skeleton?
A blob
What system does the skeletal system work with so we can move?
The muscular system
What is the cardiac muscle made up of?
Skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle
What is the skeletal system made up of?
Bones, joints and cartliage
What does the skeletal system do?
Provides a framework for the muscles
What are some of the internal organs in the skeletal system?
- Heart
- Brain
- Lungs
- Spinal cord
- Reproductive organs
What is the heart, brain, lungs, spinal cord and reproductive organs protected by?
Heart - Rib cage
Brain - Skull/cranium
Lungs - Rib cage
Spinal cord - Spine
Reproductive organs - Pelvis
What is the smallest bone in your body?
Ossicles (ear bones)
What is the biggest bone in your body?
Femur (thigh bone)
What is a joint?
A place where two bones connect together
What are some of the immovable joints?
- The bones in the skull
- The joint between the first pair of ribs and the sternum
What are the 3 types of synovial joints?
- Hinge joints
- Ball and socket joints (shoulder or hip) which allow movements in any direction
- Pivot joints (wrist or neck) which allow movements in any direction
What are synovial joints?
Freely moving joints
What is an example of ball and socket joints and what do they do?
Ball and socket joints - (shoulder or hip) which allow movements in any direction
What is an example of hinge joints and what do they do?
Hinge joints - (elbow or knee) which move in one direction
What is an example of pivot joints and what do they do?
Pivot joints - (wrist or neck) which allow movements in any direction
What is cartilage?
Cartilage is a soft, spongy connective tissue that covers the end of bones which cushions the joint and prevents friction, wear and tear between the bones
Where does a ligament attach to?
Ligament - bone to bone
Where do tendons attach to?
Tendons - muscle to bone
What is a strain?
A STRAIN is a stretched or torn muscle/tendon
What is a sprain?
A SPRAIN is a stretched or torn ligament
What are antagonistic pairs or muscles? What are some examples in the arms?
In an antagonistic muscle pair, as one muscle contracts, the other muscle relaxes or lengthens.
eg. biceps contract, triceps relaxes - this is when the arm bends
eg. bicep relaxes, triceps contract - this is when the arm straightens out
