Breathing Flashcards
What is the difference between breathing and respiration?
Breathing is the physical process of getting air in and out of the body.
Respiration is a chemical process that happens in cells. It combines oxygen and carbon dioxide to make glucose and water.
What is inhaling and exhaling?
Inhaling is when you breathe in and air enters your lungs and oxygen from that air moves to your blood.
Exhaling is when you breathe out carbon dioxide (waste gas) from your blood.
What happens to the intercostal muscles when we breathe in?
They contract and force the ribs upwards and outwards. The diaphragm contracts and flattens and these movements increase the volume of the chest which makes air move into your lungs
What happens to the intercostal muscles when we breathe out?
They relax and so does the diaphragm. The volume of the chest is decreased which forces air out of your lungs
