The Respiratory System Flashcards
what is respiration?
the exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood, and cells
- transfer of O2 from inhaled air to blood
- transfer of CO2 from blood to exhaled air
- Acid-base balance: acidity of blood
Four processes that make up respiration:
- pulmonary ventilation (breathing)
- external (pulmonary) respiration
- respiratory gas trasnsport (with assistance of CVS)
- Internal (tissue) respiration: exchange of as at the level of the cells
Structural division of the respiratory system:
- Upper Respiratory System (Nose, Pharynx, Larynx)
2. Lower Respiratory System (Trachea, Bronchi, Lungs)
Functional divisions of the respirtory system:
- conducting zone (movement of air)
2. respiratory zone (gas exchange)
Conducting Zone
Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, Bronchi & divisions
Respiratory Zone
Bronchioles & divisions, alveoli
Nose:
inhalation
Pharynx (throat):
muscular passageway for food and air
Larynx (voice box)
connects the pharyx and trachea
Trachea:
extends from the laryns to the primary bronchi
Pleural Cavity:
lungs enclosed in this membrane.
Bronchi to Bronchioles
trachea branches into bronchi at carnia
Branching of Bronchial Tree:
trachea -> primary bronchi -> seocndary bronchi -> tertiary bronchi -> bronchioles -> terminal bronchioles
