Central Nervous System (CNS) Flashcards
Components of CNS:
Brian & Spinal Cord
Compnents of the Brain
- Cerebral Hemisphere (Cerebrum)
- Diencephalon
- Brain Stem
- Cerebellum
Cerebral Hemisphere (Cerebellum)
frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital, insula
Gyri & Suci
grooves that increase SA of Brain
Brain Stem (before you becom the PM you become the MPM)
- regulation of basic life functions e.g. heart rate, respiration etc
- Mid-Brain:
- Pons
- Medulla Oblongata
Diencephalon:
- Thalamus: processes sensory input
- Hypothalamus: hormone regulation, controls homeostatic regulation
Cerebellum:
- coordinates muscular activty and maintains posture
Blood Flow to the Brain:
Blood flows to the brain via the internal carotid arteries (anterior circulation) and flows back to the heart via the jugular veins. The Circle of Willis links the anterior and posterior blood supplies
Blood Brain Barrier (BBB):
protects brain cells from harmful substances q& pathogens, selective barrier to prevent passage of many substances from the blood to brain
Meninges
three layers of connective tissue that cover the brain & spinal cord. protective barrier
what are the three layers of Meninges (PAD)
- Pia mater: closest to brain (p-proximal)
- Arachnoid Mater
- Dura Mater: furtheral away from the brain (D-distal)
Ventricles and cerebrospinal fluid (CFS)
- Protect against chemical & physical injuries
- Supplies oxygen, glucose, and other important substances from the blood to nervous tissue cells
Spinal Cord:
- Two-way conduction pathway to brain
- Major reflex centre
Doral Root
sensory info comes into spinal cord via doral root
Ventral Root
commands leave the spinal cord via the ventral root
