The Reproductive System Flashcards
Absence or abnormal
AMENORRHEA
Surgical transabdominal perforation of the uterus to obtain amniotic fluid.
AMNIOCENTESIS
The sac that lines the chorion (inside uterus) and contains the fetus.
AMNIOTIC SAC
Membranous sac or receptacle for body secretions.
BLADDERBLADDER
Lie just behind prostate gland; secretions neutralize traces of urine in urethra prior to ejaculation.
BULBOURETHRAL GLANDS
Pertaining to the neck or a constricted part of an organ .
CERVIX
The outer layer of an organ or structure.
CORTEX
Increased secretion of urine.
DIURESIS
Substance promoting increased secretion of urine.
DIURETIC
Thick, smooth muscular tube; allows sperm to exit epididymis.
DUCTUS (VAS) DEFERENS
Painful or difficult urination
DYSURIA
The derivatives of the fertilized ovum that develop into the offspring (from 2 weeks post fertilization to end of eighth week) fetus.
EMBRYO
A condition where tissue resembling the endometrium occurs aberrantly within the pelvis.
ENDOMETRIOSIS
Mucous membrane of the uterus.
ENDOMETRIUM
Involuntary discharge of urine (bedwetting), especially during sleep.
ENURESIS
First duct that sperm enters upon leaving testes; sperm mature and can be stored here.
EPIDIDYMIS
To eliminate (as waste matter) by normal discharge .
EXCRETE
First part of the female duct system; receive ovulated ovum.
FALLOPIAN TUBES
Unborn offspring in the post embryonic period (8 weeks after fertilization).
FETUS
Ovary and testes
GONADS
Blood in the urine
HEMATURIA
A depression or pit at the part of an organ where the vessels and nerves enter.
HILUMor hilus
A passageway in the groin through which the round ligament of the uterus or spermatic cord pass.
INGUINAL CANAL
Organ that filters the blood, excreting the end product of body metabolism in the form of urine..
KIDNEY
Breast
MAMMARY GLAND
Inflammation of the breast or mammary gland.
MASTITIS
The innermost portion of an organ or structure .
MEDULLA
Cessation of the menstrual cycle
MENOPAUSE
Monthly flow of blood from the genital tract of the female .
MENSES
Anatomical and functional unit of the kidney.
NEPHRON
Any condition or disease of the kidney
NEPHROSIS
Female gonad where ova are formed
OVARy
Discharge of a second degree oocyte from the ovary
OVULATION
Female reproductive cell; egg
OVUM
Part of male external genitalia; designed to deliver sperm into female reproductive tract .
PENIS
A gland in the male which surrounds the neck of the bladder and urethra; secretes up to 1/3 of semen volume .
PROSTATE GLAND
Inflammation of the pelvis of the kidney.
PYELITIS
Presence of pus in the urine.
PYURIA
Mixture of sperm and accessory gland secretions.
SEMEN
Secrete majority of semen
SEMINAL VESICLES
Tightly coiled tubules found in the testes; where sperm are produced.
SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES
Male reproductive cell
SPERM
Production of sperm
SPERMATOGENESIS
Stem cells that mature into sperm
SPERMATOGONIA
Male gonad where sperm are produced.
TESTES
Last part of male duct system; reproductive and urinary function.
URETHRA
Hollow, thick-walled ‘sac’ involved in menstruation, pregnancy and labour.
UTERUS
Tube that opens to the exterior; female organ where sperm enters.
VAGINA
