The Integumentary System Flashcards
Specialized connective tissue that functions as the major storage site for fat in the form of triglycerides.
Adipose connective tissue
Any of numerous sweat glands found primarily in the skin of the armpit, pubic region, and areolae of the breasts.
Apocrine sweat gland
Is soft and gel like with some elasticity and holds interstitial fluid which carries and delivers nutrients or waste.
Areolar connective tissue
Is a smooth muscle bundle that attaches to the bulge region of the follicle and extends to its superior attachment in the upper dermis.
Arrector pili
A thin vesicle on the skin, containing watery matter or serum, as from a burn or other injury.
Blister
A sac or saclike bodily cavity.
Bursa
A modified sweat gland in the external ear that produces earwax.
Ceruminous glands
The fibrous protein constituent of bone, cartilage, tendon, and other connective tissue that converts into gelatin by boiling.
Collagen
Cover the surface of the body. They consist of stratified squamous epithelium and the underlying connective tissues.
Cutaneous membrane
Dead or cornified epidermis.
Cuticle
A bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes.
Cyanosis
Excessive loss of water from the body or from an organ or a body part.
Dehydration
A preparation in the form of a liquid or cream that is used to remove unwanted hair from the body. Also called epilatory .
Depilatories
The sensitive connective tissue layer of the skin located below the epidermis, containing nerve endings, sweat and sebaceous glands, and blood and lymph vessels. Also called corium , cutis vera , derma.
Dermis
The major sweat glands of the human body, found in virtually all skin.
Eccrine sweat gland
The outer, nonvascular, nonsensitive layer of the skin, covering the true skin or corium.
Epidermis
A small bodily cavity or sac.
Follicle
A scleroprotein or albuminoid substance, found in the dead outer skin layer, and in horn, hair, feathers, hoofs, nails, and claws.
Keratin
Is a type of white blood cell. Found mostly in the outer layer of the skin and the lymph nodes.
Langerhans’s cells
A coat of delicate, downy hairs, especially that with which the human fetus or a newborn infant is covered.
Lanugo
Any of numerous minute oval end organs of touch in sensitive skin, as in the palms, fingertips, and soles of the feet. Also called tactile corpuscle.
Meissner’s corpuscle
Any of a group of naturally occurring dark pigments composed of granules of highly irregular polymers, especially the pigment found in skin, hair, fur, and feathers.
Melanin
A cell producing and containing melanin.
Melanocyte
Are oval receptor cells found in the skin of vertebrates that have synaptic contacts with somatosensory afferents.
Merkel cells
Cells of mesodermal origin that are capable of developing into connective tissues, blood, and lymphatic and blood vessels.
Mesenchyme
The site of transition from skin to epithelium of a mucous membrane.
Mucocutaneous junction
Line parts of the body that lead to the outside and are exposed to air.
Mucous membrane
The viscous slippery substance that consists chiefly of mucin, water, cells, and inorganic salts.
Mucus
Relating to or forming the wall of any cavity.
Parietal portion
Any small, nipplelike process or projection.
Papilla
The serous sac consisting of mesothelium and a thin layer of irregular connective tissue that lines the abdominal cavity.
Peritoneum
Inflammation of the peritoneum, often accompanied by pain and tenderness in the abdomen, vomiting, constipation, and moderate fever
Peritonitis
A delicate serous membrane investing each lung and folded back as a lining of the corresponding side of the thorax.
Pleura
Inflammation of the pleura
Pleurisy
A type of connective tissue. It has a network of reticular fibers, made of type III collagen.
Reticular connective tissue
Cutaneous glands that secrete oily matter for lubricating hair and skin.
Sebaceous gland
A thin membranes, as the peritoneum, that line certain cavities of the body and exude a serous fluid.
Serous membrane
Located, found, or placed just beneath the skin; hypodermic.
Subcutaneous
Glands in the skin that secrete perspiration.
Sudoriferous gland
The horny outer layer of the epidermis, consisting of several layers of flat, keratinized, nonnucleated, dead or peeling cells. Also called corneal layer , horny layer .
Stratum corneum
The innermost layer of the epidermis.
Stratum germinativum
The connective-tissue membrane that lines the cavity of a synovial joint . Also called synovium .
Synovial membrane
Relating to, situated in, or affecting the viscera.
