The Reformational Colonies Flashcards
Maryland’s Founding
Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore for the British Queen - Mary. The colony was designed to be free-of-worship as well, and this is one of the bigger cities that Lord Baltimore founded and named.
Georgia’s Founding
George was founded by James Oglethorpe and was actually a debter-town. James freed 30 families that were in jail for being unable to pay off debt and took them to Georgia. The colony thrived and would continue to until slaves came. James was eventually forced out by the settlers and went back to England.
The Dutch head to the Americas
Their main explorer was Henry Hudson who discovered and named the Hudson River up North. The Dutch captured Manhattan (Peter Miniut speciffically) and the town there was named New Amsterdam. The town was never finished and was doing bad, there were pirates all over the place and supreme laziness. There were only 50 homes but 17 bars!
What did Peter Stuveysant do?
Peter came to New Amsterdam and whipped it back into shape. To keep the pirates out, he build a giant wall which is now known as Wall Street. The English bought the land back and renamed the city to New York. Peter was the first to call any place in America ‘Home.’
Why did the Huguenots leave France?
These Frenchmen left the country because of laws that were recently passed, and the reason that Christians had to go to a priest to be with God.
Who led them to the Americas?
The Huguenot leader was Gaspard De Cologny. He spent a lot of money reservating Rio de Janeiro for a colony but it was raided and taken by Portugal for Brazil.
What did the Huguenots do after the attack?
They moved to Florida and built Fort Carolina as a settlement but this was attack by the Spanish. After 80,000+ Huguenots were killed, they moved to Switzerland and made deals later on with other countries to build a freedom-of-worship colony. After the arrangements, they set up town in Nova Scotia and thrived.
The English’s Late Arrival and John Cabot
The English first left for the Americas 100 years after most of the other ones. The first to sail to American for GBR was was John Cabot. He claimed a lot of the land on the East Coast.
What did Sir Francais Drake accomplish?
Drake was the first Englishman to sail around the world and was a famous pirate. He was the first of the English to bring slaves to America and in 1588, he famously took down the Spanish Armada with his small boats.
What did Richard Haklyut and Sir Walter Raleigh accomplish?
Richard and Raleigh set sail with 600 people to build the colony of Roanoke. Unfortunately, they forgot to bring farmers. The colony was officially established in 1587 and Richard went to England and back to report to the Queen. When he came back, everyone was gone and the word Croatoan was written.
John Smith and Jamestown
Richard and Raleigh then established Jamestown in 1607, but the colony did horribly. Captain John Smith came and fixed everything up. He made the citizens not eat if they didn’t work and was famously captured by the Indians and saved by Poccahontas several times.
Founding of Plymouth
The colony was founded in 1620 and was made by Puritans. Most of the citizens didn’t even practice Puritanism but the Mayflower Compact came out and everyone had to practice traditional Christianity. Half of the inhabitants died in the first year but the colony was fixed up. The Thanksgiving that started the tradition we use today was here in Plymouth.
