What is the Gilded Age?
A term for the time shortly after the Civil War, where many technological advancements were made.
What was a huge change the Civil War caused that affected everyone directly?
Many people became very stressed and the fighting broke up families due to the many deaths.

Ideas, Innovation, and Opportunity.
What changed about the presidencies later on?
The presidents were more lackluster and forgettable.
What changed for businessman in this time?
It was easier to get rich, since there were many more opportunities.
What very famous paper was released at this time?
Charles Darwin’s famous Natural Selection paper.
What two fields of scientific study changed a lot at this time?
Biology and Psychology.
What large Psychology idea became prominent during this time?
The idea that all men are animals at heart and that the way they are is dependent on their environment.
What is the Social Gospel?
An idea that the Gospel should always be apart of everything we do.

One of the first free monasteries/schools which was made by Jane Addams.
What is Legal Realism?
The belief that a Judge should have ultimate authority over a matter.
Who was Walter Rauschenbusch?
One of the first few to stand up against the Bible’s impact against society and culture.
What happened land-wise between 1860-1910?
500 million acres of land were cultivated.
What is the Homestead Act of 1862?
An act that allowed people to get up to 160 acres of land if they met three criteria- they’d live on the land for at least five years, they applied for it, and they improved the land (which can be just building a house).
What things happened in the 1890’s?
America was no longer considered a frontier and refrigeration was invented.
Who was Frederick Remington?
One of the many writers who portrayed the frontier as the Wild West.
What did the Sioux Indians do in 1876?
They fought against the American Army to try to get freedom.
By how much did the American population change in the 1860’s?
It went from 31 million to 75 million people at 1900.
Who are Robber Barons/Captialists?
Business entrepreneurs who were the first millionaires.
What changed about everyday items after the Civil War?
The US stopped relying on other countries and made things themselves. The US eventually became the biggest producer (for a while).
Who was Cornelius Vanderbilt?
An entrepreneur who opened up a ferry business and made a huge amount of money- he turned 100$ as a teenager into 10,000$.
Who is Andrew Carnigie?
A humanist robber baron who founded the Steel Industry.
What is Vertical Integration?
The owning of everything in a system, so in a steel industry, it would be owning the mines, stores, and factories.
What is a Benefactor?
A person who gives money or other help to a person or cause.
