What is the Gilded Age?
A term for the time shortly after the Civil War, where many technological advancements were made.
What was a huge change the Civil War caused that affected everyone directly?
Many people became very stressed and the fighting broke up families due to the many deaths.
What were the ‘3 Forces of Change?’
Ideas, Innovation, and Opportunity.
What changed about the presidencies later on?
The presidents were more lackluster and forgettable.
What changed for businessman in this time?
It was easier to get rich, since there were many more opportunities.
What very famous paper was released at this time?
Charles Darwin’s famous Natural Selection paper.
What two fields of scientific study changed a lot at this time?
Biology and Psychology.
What large Psychology idea became prominent during this time?
The idea that all men are animals at heart and that the way they are is dependent on their environment.
What is the Social Gospel?
An idea that the Gospel should always be apart of everything we do.

One of the first free monasteries/schools which was made by Jane Addams.
What is Legal Realism?
The belief that a Judge should have ultimate authority over a matter.
Who was Walter Rauschenbusch?
One of the first few to stand up against the Bible’s impact against society and culture.
What happened land-wise between 1860-1910?
500 million acres of land were cultivated.
What is the Homestead Act of 1862?
An act that allowed people to get up to 160 acres of land if they met three criteria- they’d live on the land for at least five years, they applied for it, and they improved the land (which can be just building a house).
What things happened in the 1890’s?
America was no longer considered a frontier and refrigeration was invented.
