What happened when the war ended between the North and South?
The North and South actually held a grudge against each other.
What was forgotten during the war?
The fighting for the slaves, this virtue was lost.
What changed in the South after the war?
The South became very different, there were a lot of widows and single parents and poor people and starving kids.
What was needed at the end of the Civil War?
Justice, Mercy, and Humility.
What was the big question after the war?
How do you treat the states who seceded?
What is the Amnesty Plan?
A plan in which the seceded states would join the Union again and they would have help in rebuilding.
Who were the Radical Republicans?
People who had the same ideas as Lincoln and were die-hard Republicans.
What did the Radical Republicans think should happen?
They wanted to make it hard for the seceded states to rejoin and they wanted the states to be treated as conquered territory.
What happened on April 15, 1865?
John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln. And he famously shouted in Latin ‘Death to Tyrants.’
Who was Andrew Johnson?
The Vice President of America, he was planned to be assassinated after Lincoln.
What was the outcome of Lincoln’s assassination?
The Plan of Amnesty was unable to be passed.
What are the Black Codes?
Laws that allowed black people to marry freely and own land and participate in court (somewhat).
What did the 13th Amendment do?
It completely banned slavery.
What did the South do when the slaves were freed?
They illegally took union land and animals to give to the now-free slaves.
What did the First Restoration Act do?
It removed all southern positions of power, it divided the Confederate states into five military districts, and for a Confederate state to join the Union it had to make a new Constitution that was approved by the Union.
What are Carpetbaggers?
People who bribed to get back into the Union or its jobs.
What are Scalawags?
People who would rat out neighbors/friends (even if it was a lie) for personal benefit.
What was another result of the freedom of slaves and these laws?
Much more prejudice was put towards black people.
What is the Ku Klux Klan?
A strange group of people who are extremely prejudiced and often commit murder.
What is Impeaching?
The removal of someone from presidency.
What happened in 1876?
Samuel Tildan faced off with Rutherford B. Hayes for the position of president.
Who became president in 1876 and why?
Hayes became president because the radical republicans offered the removal of the harsh Union laws in exchange for voting for Hayes.
What did Nathan Forrest do after the war?
His mindset changed and he started to greatly help the African-American community.
What did Nathan Forrest famously say in one of his speeches?
He said that ‘We may be different in skin color, but not in sediment.’
