What is this lecture named after?
This lecture is the title of a famous psalm that shows brotherhood and eternity. This is used to represent the relationships between American leaders such as Jefferson and John Adams.
What are some of the things similar between the Psalm and those early American leaders?
The two show great signs of brotherhood, goodwill, and being respectful foes. In the stories from the psalms and between the leaders, they would always point out to their enemy what they were doing wrong, etc.
During the time that Jefferson and Adams were in Washington’s cabinet of helpers, what were the two main parties of the time?
The Federalists and Democrat-Republicans. (The Democrats and the Republicans were the same at the time and considered one)
Did Adams and Jefferson want to become president? How did they feel about that and other similar positions?
Neither of them wanted to become president, even though they eventually did. They believed that running for and begging for a position will make a bad president.
Where did John Adams come from?
He came from Massachussets and had a very ‘Northern’ mindset. He had slaves doing things around his home and he was famously short and fat. In 1765, he famously defended the British soldiers who killed civilians in the Boston Massacre in court.
Where did Thomas Jefferson come from?
Jefferson came from the ‘Gentleman’s Class’ of Virginia and there were no slaves there so he did manual labor. He was tall and slender, and while Adams was getting grey hairs from age, he had fiery red hair.
What were some of John’s attitudes and traits?
Adams was very outgoing, he tried to correct people’s grammar and liked to get into arguements.
Adams was known as the ‘Atlas of Independence,’ which basically means that he could answer anything you asked correctly.
What were some of Thomas’s attitudes and traits?
Thomas was very relaxed and calm. He liked talking with people and being social, and he’d only start a debate if he knew he’d win. He was also known for loving his family greatly; he was never away from home for more than three months at a time.
When and Where was Jefferson Born?
In 1743 in Shadwell, VA. He was educated by George Wythe and himself. He was born into a very rich family, he had a lot of money and a lot of land.
What did Jefferson things of Farmers?
He explained in a quote that he believes that they are the most valuable people and the work they do with their own land is very honorable and respectable.
What were some of the things Jefferson proposed?
He made the ideas for Seperation of Church and State, Freedom of Speech, Press, and Religion, and more.
Why was the State and the Church separated?
They believed that if one person/group controlled both religion and the state one would have too much power.
Why was Jefferson known as a ‘Noble Savage?’
He was called this because he liked camping and setting up intricate camps. He believed that being with nature brought one closer to happiness.
What were some of Jefferson’s Interests?
He loved reading, archaeology, camping, and several sciences. He also loved privacy, in fact he rarely gave speeches and often had others read them for him.
What were some of the Home-Related inventions Jefferson made?
He invented Wine Elevators, the swivel chair, several clocks, double-opening doors, and double-glass-paned windows.
