The Colossus of Empire: The Colonies Flashcards
Compass and the Clock
Invented by the Chinese, European Compasses always pointed North. No way to tell Latitude or Longitude. Longitude had to be calculated with trigonometery. Clocks were gravity based and would be messed up by waves. John Harrison invented an accurate clock powered by springs.
The French
Established trade locations but focused on strategical location. They also built massive forts in the middle of the woods. Sameul De Champlain found the St. Lawrence River and ruled ‘New France’ which was 3x larger than France itself!
Trading Colonies
Always on the shore, primary focus was money. These were made mostly by the Portugese and the French.
Strategic Colonies
Mostly made by the French, designed to control large expanses.
Exploitation Colonies
Made mostly by the Spanish, these used the natives as slaves and were temporary.
Parish Settlements
Mostly made by the Dutch and English, these were made to be permanent and were very successful.
The Portugese
Founded colonies in India, Africa, and South America. Their most famous explorer is Amerigo Vespucci and he worked for the Medici’s. In 1501 he discovered South America; heck, the Americas are named after him.
The Spanish
Their most famous explorers were Magellan and Balboa and they sailed around the world. When they arrived first there were about 3mil natives and at the late 1500’s there were 12,000 and they were all slaves.
