Q

What affect does light have on photosynthesis?

A

Light provides the energy needed for photosynthesis
As light level is raised, rate of photosynthesis increases but only to a certain point then it won’t make a difference because something else will become the limiting factor

Q

What affect does carbon dioxide have on photosynthesis?

A

The amount of CO2 will only increase the rate of photosynthesis to a point after this the graph flattens out showing CO2 is no longer the limiting factor

Q

What is one way to control the amount of CO2?

A

Dissolve different amount of sodium hydrogencarbonate in water which gives off CO2

Q

Why is temperature sometimes the limiting factor of photosynthesis?

A

If it’s too low then the enzymes needed for photosynthesis work slowly at a low temperature
If it’s too hot (45) enzymes needed for photosynthesis and other reactions may become denatured

Q

What do greenhouses do?

A

Trap the suns heat to ensure temperature doesn’t become limiting
Often have artificial light for more photosynthesis time
Farmers can increase the level of carbon dioxide

Q

What experiment can be done to work out ideal conditions for photosynthesis?

A

Using Canadian pondweed you can easily measure the amount of oxygen being produced in a given time to show rate of photosynthesis
(Count bubbles or measure gas in syringe)

Q

Give one other way in which temperature and carbon dioxide can be controlled in a greenhouse?

A

Temperature- using shades or ventilation.

Carbon dioxide- use a paraffin heater which makes carbon dioxide as a by product
