The Digestive System and Enzymes Flashcards
What do the salivary glands do?
Produce amylase enzyme in the saliva
What does the liver do?
Bile is produced which neutralises stomach acid and emulsified fats
What is the gullet?
The oesophagus
What does the gall bladder do?
Bile is stored before it is released into the small intestine
What does the large intestine do?
Excess water is absorbed from the food
What does the stomach do?
It pummels food with its muscular walls
Produces protease enzyme, pepsin
Produces hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and give the right ph for protease to work
What does the pancreas do?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes and releases them into the small intestine
What does the small intestine do?
Produces protease amylase and lipase
Food is absorbed out of the digestive system and into the blood
How is the small intestine adapted for absorption?
Inside wall is thin
Large surface area (lined with millions of villi)
Villi have good blood supply (capillaries) allowing fast diffusion
What does amylase do?
Converts starch into sugars
Where is amylase made?
Salivary glands
Pancreas
Small intestine
What does protease do?
Concerts proteins into amino acids
Where is protease formed?
The stomach (called pepsin) The pancreas The small intestine
What does lipase do?
Converts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
Where is lipase made?
The pancreas
The small intestine
