Enzymes Flashcards
What do enzymes do?
Carefully control chemical reactions to get the right amount of substances
How can you usually increase the rate of reaction?
Increasing the temperature
What do enzymes act as?
Biological catalysts
They reduce the need for high temperatures and we only have enzymes to speed up useful chemical reactions in the body
What is a catalyst?
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction
What are enzymes made up from?
Proteins
Which are made up from chains Amino acids
As well as catalysts what do proteins act as?
Structural components of tissues, hormones and antibodies
What is an enzymes shape like?
Specific and has a unique shape that fits onto the substance involved in the reaction
( active site )
How can you increase the rate of an enzyme catalysed reaction?
Increase the temperature
What happens if you increase the temperature too much?
Some of the bonds holding the enzyme together break which destroys the enzymes special shape
The enzyme is denatured due to the activité site substrate complex being destroyed
How does pH affect enzymes?
If it’s too high or too low the pH interferes with the bonds holding the enzyme together which changes the shape and denatures the enzyme
What do all enzymes have?
An optimum pH. (It’s often neutral)
