Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The random movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a semi permeable membrane
Where can diffusion happen?
Solutions and gases
How does concentration difference between two substances affect the diffusion rate?
The bigger the difference in concentration the faster the diffusion rate
What do cell membranes do?
Hold the cell together
Slopes substances to move in and out of the cell through diffusion
What molecules can and can’t diffuse through cell membranes?
Small molecules like oxygen and glucose can
Big molecules like starch and protein can’t
In what direction do the particles move?
Both directions but since there’s more on one side there’s a net movement from that side
Explain diffusion in the lungs?
Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli to the blood which then circulates the body
Explain diffusion in the gut?
Digested products diffuse from the gut into the capillaries in the villi of the small intestine
Give an example of diffusion in plants?
Carbon dioxide diffuses from air space between mesophyll cell into chloroplasts
Oxygen diffuses out of stomata carbon dioxide diffuses in
