What is an Act of Attainder?
Removal of property, land, titles and money if deemed to have committed treason. These Acts can be reversed. Eg. Surrey was attained for defending Richard instead of execution.
What is a Bond?
Written agreement to pay fines if promise or agreement broken. 36 out of 62 noble families gave bonds.
What is Crown Lands?
Land owned by the monarch.
What are Feudal dues?
Money paid to King if avoided military service or anything deriving from feudal system.
What is the Great Council?
Large group of nobles meeting for policy and support. Five called in reign. Would authorise subsidies such as for Warbeck or France.
What is the King’s Council?
An inner circle of eight members for support and advice for King. Eg. Lord Daubenay
What is Patronage?
Support, usually financial, bestowed on one and another in exchange for support. eg. Lord Daubenay rewarded.
What is Order of the Garter?
Order of knighthood. Very prestigious - only 37 given out. eg. Reginald Bray.
What is Recognisance?
Promise to pay if a noble breaks terms of an agreement.
What is retaining?
Key nobles recruit gentry and their men to form armies. Henry passes law against this in 1485 and 1504 to protect himself.
Lord Burgavenny fined £70,580 for illegally retaining.
What is wardship?
Children inheriting land and titles. Placed under protectorship of the King and monarch can claim the money until they inherit it.
