The Link Reaction Flashcards

Q
What are the 2 stages of the link reaction?
A
- Pyruvate is dehydrogenated (catalysed by Pyruvate dehydrogenase).
• The H+ ions are accepted by NAD, which is reduced to NADH
• Pyruvate is decarboxylated (catalysed by Pyruvate decarboxylase).
↪️The carboxyl group is released as CO2
• The decarboxylation AND dehydrogenation of Pyruvate forms Acetate (2C)
- CoA binds to the acetate group and carries it to the Krebs cycle as Acetyl CoA

Q
Where does the link reaction take place?
A
Mitochondrial matrix
2
Q
What are the products of the link reaction per glucose molecule?
A
- 2x CO2
- 2x NADH
- 2x Acetyl CoA
