Q

What are the 2 stages of the link reaction?

A
  1. Pyruvate is dehydrogenated (catalysed by Pyruvate dehydrogenase).

• The H+ ions are accepted by NAD, which is reduced to NADH

• Pyruvate is decarboxylated (catalysed by Pyruvate decarboxylase).
↪️The carboxyl group is released as CO2

• The decarboxylation AND dehydrogenation of Pyruvate forms Acetate (2C)

  1. CoA binds to the acetate group and carries it to the Krebs cycle as Acetyl CoA
