Q

What is negative feedback?

A

It is a process that brings about a reversal of any change in conditions.
It ensures that an optimum steady state is maintained as the internal environment is returned to its original set of conditions after any change.

Q

What is Positive Feedback?

A

A process that increases any change detected by the receptors. It tends to be harmful and does NOT lead to homeostasis.

Q

How can enzymes be affected by changes in temperature

SYNOPTIC LINK

A

A rise in temperature makes molecules vibrate more.

If a temperature is too high above the optimum, bonds are broken in the tertiary structure (Ionic & Hydrogen).

The active site changes shape so substrate can no longer fit in (less enzyme-substrate complexes formed).

The enzyme is denatured.

Q

What are the principles of homeostasis?

A
  • any change is detected by receptors
  • the communication system transmits a message from the receptor to the effector
  • through negative feedback the effectors reverse the change
