Q
Describe the structure of ATP.
A
ATP is a phosphorylated nucleotide.
- Each molecule is made up of adenosine and 3 phosphate molecules.
- Can be hydrolysed to ADP + Pi.
- Provides an immediate source of energy for biological processes in cells (universal energy currency).
- Energy released from respiration is stored in the bonds

Q
Why do living organisms need to respire?
A
• For metabolic processes:
- Active Transport - Replication of DNA - Synthesis of organelles before cell divides - Movement
