Q

What is the need for communication systems?

A

Multicellular organisms require communication systems as they are differentiated and have a division of labour.
Provides a link between receptor (detecting stimulus) and effector (triggered to carry out response.

Q

What is cell signalling?

A

It is communication between cells.
One cell releases a messenger molecule which travel to another cell.
It is detected by the cell as it’s specific receptor will have a complementary shape to the messenger molecule.

Q

Multicellular organisms need to coordinate different organs, what does the communication system need to do in order to do this?

A
  • cover the whole body
  • enable cells to communicate with each other
  • enable specific communication
  • enable rapid communication
  • enable both long term and short term responses
