Q

What is the importance of NAD in respiration?

A

It operates during GLYCOLYSIS, the LINK reaction, KREBS cycle AND in both ANAEROBIC pathways.

• Accepts a PAIR of H+ and is reduced NAD▶️NADH, when it loses hydrogen ions it is oxidised NADH▶️NAD.

Q

What are coenzymes?

A

REMEMBER: ( Many enzymes require the presence of another non protein/non-catalyst substance in order to function)

• Coenzymes work by binding with the enzyme at the active site.
↪️ (Sometimes it will alter its shape so it can bind more effectively with it’s substrate)

• Can help the enzyme transfer a group of atoms from one molecule to another.

Q

What is the importance of Coenzyme A (CoA) in respiration?

A
  • Used to transfer ETHANOATE from LINK reaction to KREBS cycle.
  • Acetyl CoA is important for the breakdown of fatty acids.
Structure:
• 3 phosphoryl groups
• Adenosine
• Panthothenic acid
• Cysteine
